about Papaya Beads
Papaya Beads is a fundraiser for TRUE Africa. TRUE Africa is a non-profit that serves HIV/AIDS orphans and other vulnerable children in Uganda. Our main focus is education. We match children with sponsors who provide funding for school fees and we also assist villages with the construction of basic school buildings. We care for each sponsored child by providing them with basic necessities, such as mosquito nets, clothing, food, and textbooks. Both TRUE Africa and Papaya Beads are run completely by volunteers, which allows your donation to go directly to the children that we help! Our program services were 99.6% in 2016!
How the fundraiser works
Papaya Beads is a fundraiser to provide basic necessities for the HIV/AIDS orphans and vulnerable children that TRUE Africa serves. Each handmade, Ugandan paper bead necklace purchased provides a child with one basic need, such as new shoes, sanitary pads, a mosquito net, bananas, beans, school fees, a blanket, a new dress, and more!
Here is our process:
Here is our process:
I work closely with Esther, as she designs necklace styles and I choosing colors. Esther then collects the needed colored paper strips, hand-rolls each bead, and assembles every single necklace. She is careful in her work, making sure that she produces beautiful, high-quality beads and necklaces.
Necklace Pick Up
During the TRUE Africa annual visit, I meet Esther in her little craft shop in Uganda. There, I pick up the completed necklaces and pay Esther for her work. This payment supports Esther craft business, young family, and her orphanage (which support about 300 children). I bundle up the necklaces and bring them home on the plane with me!
I assign each necklace style a care item. For example, the Shibah style necklace provides two weeks of schools fees, the Viola style necklace provides a new blanket, and the Noeh style necklace provides 7 lbs dry beans. Each necklace purchased provides a care item to an HIV/AIDS orphan or vulnerable child in Uganda. My daughters and I then photograph, sort, tag, pack and ship the necklaces our to our wonderful supporters! We volunteer our time and effort, which means absolutely ALL funds raised go directly to the children that we serve!
Deliver care items
When a necklace is purchased, I match that necklace's care item to one of TRUE Africa's children in need. By corresponding with our Ugandan social workers, I know exactly what each child needs. The funding from the necklace sale is used to purchase local, Ugandan products for the child. If possible, I personally deliver the care item to the child during my annual TRUE Africa trip to Uganda. If I am unable to make the delivery myself, the child's assigned Ugandan social worker will deliver the item(s) to the child. I will do my best to try and provide a photo of the item delivery on our Project Blog.
